Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a Montessori Early Learning Center?
The media has clearly raised public awareness about the critical importance of a stimulative education during the formative (3-6) years. Recently, across the world, there has been an abundance of articles supporting early (rather than later) intellectual stimulation. Documented scientific studies proved what Dr. Montessori knew nearly a century ago. Namely, that young children possess an amazing window of opportunity during which they can permanently enrich their intellect.
The human brain is a mass of neurons. Think of it as a three-dimensional dot-to-dot, with more dots (neurons) than could ever be connected.
Connections-information pathways called neural bridges-are formed or strengthened each time a child's brain is stimulated. The more bridges that form, the more the intellect is permanently developed.
Intellectual stimulation is one of the components that make Montessori learning so unique and vital. What is Montessori?
Montessori learning strategies aim for the fullest possible development of the whole child, ultimately preparing him for life's many rich experiences. Dr. Maria Montessori developed her philosophy of how children best learn, based upon actual observations of children. She was trained in medicine, psychology, and anthropology. What type of activities will my child engage in?
Activities will be concentrated in the following areas:
- Geography & Culture
- Practical Life
Does Denham Springs Montessori utilize a 100% Montessori approach to teaching?
No! Although we believe in the Montessori approach to teaching, we also add aspects of other types of instruction to our teaching methods. For example, traditional Montessori mixes various age groups. As a general rule, we divide classes according to the year the students will begin kindergarten. This is beneficial because it allows us to teach basics and build on these basics yearly. However, if we observe that a student is gifted in areas, that child will be challenged with the older children. Another variation from the traditional Montessori approach is that we added the structure of tables and chairs as opposed to primarily working on rugs on the floor. We feel that our students will benefit from a little more structure when entering a traditional school setting. An additional variation from the traditional Montessori approach is the utilization of various curricula. We utilize traditional Montessori methods of instruction and add several curricula that we feel are an asset for our students. For example, we use the Montessori sandpaper letters to teach handwriting and letter recognition, but we also use the Handwriting Without Tears Curriculum. Will my child be happy and intellectually challenged in this environment?
During the first six years of age, a child has a tremendous ability to learn and assimilate from the world around him, without conscious effort. We will introduce materials and activities, which are specially designed to stimulate the intellect. Intellectual stimulation is one of the components that make Montessori learning so unique and vital. Will my child experience secure emotional growth and develop his or her self-esteem in this environment?
We believe in noncompetitive individualized programs for children. We encourage the children to focus his/her attention on subject matter being presented, the child then works at his/her own optimum level-in an environment where beauty and orderliness are emphasized and appreciated. A spontaneous love of “work” is revealed as the child is given the freedom (within boundaries) to make his/her own choices.
Caregivers are trained facilitators, always ready to assist and direct. Our purpose is to stimulate the child's enthusiasm for learning and to guide it, without interfering with the child's natural desire to teach himself and become independent. Each child works through his individual cycle of activities, and learns to truly understand according to his own unique needs and capabilities.
Everything in the environment has a specific use or purpose. There is nothing in the prepared environment that the child cannot see or touch. All of the furniture and equipment is scaled down to the child's size and is within easy reach.
We strive to create an environment in which freedom, responsibility, and social and intellectual development spontaneously flourish.

The BEST place for my kids
I love DSE!! My children are well cared for, happy, and they love their teachers. I feel the staff at DSE keep my children engaged and learning new skills daily. The teachers really have become part of our family. As a mom, it's comforting to know that the staff at DSE love and care for my children just like I do.
My daughter has attended DS Montessori since 6 weeks and could not be happier with the care she received as an infant and now toddler. The staff is very caring, professional and knowledgeable. As most first time parents are I was initially concerned about leaving my tiny baby for the first time but quickly came to feel comforted that my daughter was in loving hands while I had to be away at work. Now that she is a toddler I can see that not only is she well cared for but she is learning and has been all along. When I see her with other children her age I realize how much she has learned at the Montessori school already and know that she is in the right place for her preschool years.
My daughter loves this school. It has a great balance of play and classroom time. I believe both are important for a 3 year old's development. She also learns basic manners. She is treated very well by the staff!
Best preschool in the area
Both of my children have attended pre-school at Denham Springs Montessori and I have been extremely thrilled with all they learned. My son is now in elementary school and is getting perfect grades. My daughter still attends DSM and it is so rewarding to see all that she is learning. I have no doubt that she will start kindergarten as a reader. I am very impressed by their programs & highly recommend them.
